Stille Havn Hus is a 16-bed adult foster care facility for people with serious and persistent mental illness. We are located about a mile from downtown Walker, MN, on 23 acres of land with woods, a pond and nearly nine acres of open lawn. Most of our residents have co-occurring medical and/or chemical abuse disorders. We specialize in hard-to-place individuals whose have not been successful in most other placements. We are a cost-effective option for many due to our low rate of psychiatric hospitalizations. Our skilled and supportive team has a history of caring for our people on-site as their psychiatric conditions inevitably cycle.

But pathology is not the main story of Stille Havn Hus. The main story has much more to do with real improvement in the lives of many special people. These improvements have been measured in the reduction of symptoms, improvements noted by loved ones, compliments by case managers, and various quality surveys. We contend that the main measure is quality of life. We have many stories of dramatic improvements in the quality of life of our residents, and Pearl and Mary are good examples. Pearl has lived with us for four years. Before her arrival, her experiences were dominated by failed placements interspersed between stays in psychiatric hospitals. She averaged 180 days of hospitalization per year. Mary has lived in one of our supportive living apartments for two years. Before coming to us she had four psychiatric hospitalizations just between Christmas and Easter. Pearl and Mary have had no psychiatric hospitalizations since coming to the Hus, and both now express feelings of home and belonging.
